In the 1970s, I became the first man to make a living by modeling hands in San Francisco. This is a long story, but for 3-4 years, I was the only one doing this job in the city. During this time, I worked hard and became well-known and successful, taking pictures of hands for many different products and companies.

In April 1984, I got a phone call from a photographer I really liked, Dennis Gray. He booked me for an hour and asked me to bring different colored shirts, a few sport coats, and a suit jacket.

I got there, and we picked a pale blue shirt for me to wear. Then we started taking pictures. I had to hold this strange small plastic object in different ways. After 45 minutes, the photographer, Dennis, said we had finished the shot. I then asked, “What is this thing?” Dennis answered, “I’m not sure, it’s called a ‘mouse’.”

One year after that, I bought my first Mac, a model called 512. When I opened the box, I saw that almost every part of the box and all the instructions had my own hand printed on them. I didn’t remember taking a photo of my hand at the time. It took me a few days to realize that the hand in the photos was actually mine!

I also got many photos of my hand for MacWorld magazine. In fact, I was told that my hand was the only living thing that was on the cover of MacWorld magazine for its first five years.

Even though I didn’t help create the Mac, I did help make it well-known and popular.
