Our first meeting with reporters was with Byte magazine in October 1983. We were trying to get them to write an article about us, and we wanted it to come out at the same time as the Macintosh computer was introduced in January. Byte magazine needed three months’ notice, so they were the first ones to write about us.

A long time ago, there was a magazine called Byte that was aimed at people who loved computers and understood how they worked. Five or six of us had a meeting with the people in charge of the magazine, including Steve Jobs. We were discussing the special computer software that makes the Mac look user-friendly and how long it took to create.

QuickDraw is a special graphics package that was written only by Bill Atkinson. It was an important part of both Lisa and Macintosh computers. A reporter from Byte magazine asked Steve how many years of work (man-years) it took to write QuickDraw.

Steve stopped talking for a moment, and then started speaking again to the person from Byte magazine. “We spent 24 years working on QuickDraw. It took a team of 24 people who worked full-time on it for a year.”
